Ed Sheeran just dropped 'Sapphire,' and it wasn’t your typical pop release. In just two weeks, it hit #1 on Spotify India, becoming the first English-language song to do so since 'Stay' by The Kid Laroi & Justin Bieber back in 2021.

And here’s the wild part—it wasn’t just Spotify. It also topped Apple Music, Amazon, and JioSaavn, which, notably, rarely sees English tracks in the top 10.

Why is 'Sapphire' suddenly everywhere? Simply put, it’s marketing genius. Warner Music India didn’t treat this as an ‘international’ song. Instead, they rolled it out like an Indian release.

Ed didn’t just fly in for promo—he fully immersed himself in Indian culture. From playing cricket with Indian celebs, eating 11 butter chickens, to dueting with Indian stars... he was everywhere.

He even recorded parts of 'Sapphire' in India with Arijit Singh, who also appears uncredited on the track. They literally rode around Singh’s hometown on a scooter before recording a full Punjabi version that’s dropping soon.

This wasn’t just a song release; it was a city-by-city, culture-first strategy. Ed previewed the song in India months before release, teased Punjabi lyrics from an auto-rickshaw, and jammed with locals everywhere he went.

And get this—'Sapphire' hit India’s Spotify Top 5 before it even reached the Viral charts. It now has over 800k Instagram reels using the track.

So, what’s the lesson here for artists and labels? It's simple:

- Lean into local culture, don’t just broadcast.
- Short, intense campaigns are more effective than long, dragged-out ones.
- Surprise drops + authentic content equal gold.
- And timing? Absolute key.

Ed Sheeran didn’t just release a song, he created a moment. This is what happens when an artist fully immerses themselves in a market, and fans feel it.
